How to Find the Best Graduate School for you

You’ve graduated college and you’re ready for the next step. The logical choice is graduate school, but how do you find the right one for you? Which graduate school to attend can have tremendous impact on your future career, so you want to be sure to make the right choice. Here are some things you should be considering when applying to graduate school.

Are you interested in a Doctoral or a Masters program? Some graduate schools offer a terminal Masters, meaning the Masters Degree is as far as you can go. Others allow you to move from Masters to Doctoral, and still others let you apply to either one directly. Decide which of these programs is right for you. Doctoral programs are often much longer and more rigorous, but of course completing the Doctorate leads to greater career opportunities. Certain schools are better equipped to give you a Doctoral education, while others are better for the Masters Degree. This is an important consideration in choosing a school.

You then want to consider the reputation of the school to which you may be applying. Is the school known for producing people successful in your discipline of study? Is the school well known in this field? Weigh these considerations against the likelihood of you being accepted to the program and of completing the program. A program may be great, but if you don’t get into it, or worse, if you don’t finish, you will have wasted valuable time that you could have spent pursuing a degree elsewhere.

Consider the practical aspects. Will you be able to hold a job if you need to while you are in the program? Will you have to travel far from your own state? Can you afford the program? Can you afford living expenses while in the program, and loan payments afterwards?

Once you have taken all of these things into account, you must consider the faculty. See what kind of research faculty members have done in your field. Are they respected in the field or on the periphery? Look into their publications. Have they written many books on the subjects you will be studying? You might even pick up one or more of these books to judge how much you will enjoy having one of these faculty members as your professor.

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, it couldn’t hurt to visit some of the schools you are considering. Meet the faculty and students and see if you like them and will be able to work with them. Look at the school’s facilities and decide whether you will be happy and comfortable earning your degree there.

Graduate school is an important step towards your future. Use the tips above to help you carefully research and consider the right one for you. A quality graduate school environment can help you earn a highly profitable and useful degree quickly and efficiently so that you can get started on your chosen career.

What Is Self Discipline?

I am always curious to learn more from successful people. How do I learn from them? I talk to them and try to figure out why they are successful. If the opportunity permits, I observe how they do things.

I realize one thing about them. They have self-discipline. In other words, they have their own set of rules and they do things according to their rules.

What do I mean by self-discipline? Let look at the below example: A person who is employed is required to start work at 8.30am in the morning. He will need to do so because his employer will punish him if he is late or he did not turn up for work. Thus there is this rule that keeps a person to report to work punctually.

Now, what if this rule is removed? Will that person still report to work punctually? Will that person always turn up for work? Once the rule is removed, a person without self-discipline will not turn up for work punctually. He may not even turn up for work sometime.

In the case of a self-disciplined person, he will still turn up for work punctually and as per normal. Even though the employer’s rule does not exist, his own set of rules exists. And one of his rules must be “To be punctual for work”

Since we have understood what is the meaning of self-discipline, the next step is to find out what are the rules of successful people. These are some of the rules that I have found out so far:

They work hard. They will start work early in the morning and work more than the usual office hours.

They work smart. They always try to figure out a way to do things more efficiently.

They are always keen to learn new things. By learning new things, they are able to improve themselves and apply their new knowledge to practical use.

They love what they are doing. They are passionate of about their works. To them, work is play and they are having a lot of fun.

They never give up easily. When they encountered obstacles, they think about how to overcome the obstacles instead of giving up in despair.

They are optimistic. Even if things do not go well for them, they are still remain positive and optimistic

The weekly idea that I will like to share with you: Be self discipline by creating your own rules!

How To Cure Herpes In Kids And Adults?

Herpes is a viral disease that generally affects the mouth and the genital areas. The virus called HSV-2 causes the genital virus. HSV 1 is responsible for the oral herpes.

The action of HSV 1 virus is generally seen among children. It is difficult to identify the symptoms at first though. Usually, when you see sores and blisters in the mouth of the kid for the first time you don’t generally associate them with herpes. But when this goes on for some time the child continue to play and associate with their friends in the normal way, but in the process they have caused the disease to spread. The virus spreads very fast through physical contact.

Herpes attack is the peculiar one. The first attack is termed as the primary episode. When this subsides, it is not all over. It remains dormant in the nerves nearby, only to re-emerge periodically and cause further attacks. But once you know that it is herpes and not the common sores, the treatment perspective changes. With proper precautions, the immune system gradually builds up and once you know who the attacker is you take steps to reduce the impact of the attack.

Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for this disease. The infected body will always remain the storehouse for the virus. As for the home cure, certain precautionary steps and matters relating to hygiene need to be understood thoroughly before putting them into practice.

Well, two things are important here. You need to stop the herpes attack from happening again and secondly, you should not become the transmission ‘tower’ to transfer this fast-spreading disease.

Some of the suggested steps that you can use at home to prevent the effect of this disease are discussed below.

1.After you get in contact with the person suffering from herpes, wash your hands.

2.Do not touch the sores with hands and not with the cloth even. Use cotton for the purpose and throw it after use.

3.The affected area needs to be cleaned and kept dry.

4.Until the herpes is healed, sexual contact is not recommendable. Genital herpes is a difficult condition. For the virus may be life long and under such a situation sexual activity must be avoided at all the costs. You will be the cause of spreading the disease to your sexual partner, if you violate this discipline.

5.During the peak of the outbreak, the pain will be unbearable, but there are natural ways to control it to some extent. The main care is related to the type of dressing you indulge in. Wear loose cotton clothes and try to keep the area dry.

6.Make liberal use of the ice packs by holding it on the affected part, for short durations. Take warm water bath. Carefully dry the affected areas with cotton.

All in all, herpes is a disease that can not be cured, but must be endured. But you can counter the magnitude of its nuisance to a great extent, if you keep all these natural aspects of care in mind!

Various Speed Reading Techniques

The ability to speed read is an important skill in today’s world, where – whether we are students or at work – we are often expected to read hefty amounts of materials on a daily basis. As a result, improving your speed reading technique is something each and every one of us should not only do, but maintain. What, then, are speed reading techniques?

Speed reading – the essential elements

Before you start to learn any particular speed reading technique, you need to consider that all speed reading techniques rely on three essential elements:

1. A desire to improve you reading speed;

2. A willingness to give new ideas a chance; and

3. Motivation, discipline and continued practice.

Without these three key elements, no speed reading technique is going to succeed.

Speeding reading technique (1) – Skimming

Almost all successful speed readers will attest to the fact that they are a successful speed reader because they have a form of peripheral vision that allows them to see large amount of data on a page and to “skim” what they are reading. In short, speed reading like this means that one is not reading each and every word on the page, but merely scanning through the material. Using this speed reading technique, every now and then you will come across a keyword or phrase and it is this that will provide you with the essence of what is being written. The rest of the information on the page is discarded.

Although this speed reading technique would seem to indicate that the reader does not fully comprehend what has been written, in fact studies have shown this is not the case – majority of speed readers using this technique actually increased their comprehension of the reading materials!

Speed reading technique (2) – first sentence reading

Unlike speed reading technique (1), in speed reading technique (2), the reader will read the first sentence of each paragraph, in order to get the crux (main idea) of the idea behind the paragraph and will then skim read the remainder of the paragraph. This process is then repeated on down the page until such time as all the reading material has been exhausted.

Using speed reading technique (2), it is generally understood that the reader will glean enough information from the first sentence not to be overly concerned about the information contained in the remainder of the paragraph, where the writer will merely be reinforcing the notion set out in sentence one. However, this technique does fall-down on one major point – it pre-supposes that a paragraph only has one idea, which is clearly not always the case! If you find that you are reading material where the writer has used multiple ideas in the same paragraph, you may need to adapt your speed reading technique to one of the other speed reading techniques.

Speed reading technique (3) – Group wording

There is a term in speed reading circles that is seen as being one of the major demons of reading: “subvocalization”. Subvocalization is a clinical term for word-for-word reading – and it’s a huge no-no in speed reading techniques. Subvocalization slows reading down, without providing any upswing in comprehension to counter the lost reading time.

Group wording, as the name suggests, is where the reader looks at a group of words and phrases at the same time. Using the group wording technique, speed readers are able to read large chunks of information at the same time – thus, saving time.

Additional speed reading techniques

Aside from the specific speed reading techniques in 1 to 3 above, there are a number of habits/practices that are generally considered counter-productive to speed reading – thus will have an affect on your speed reading abilities. In no particular order, these include:

  • subvocalization – as already stated, this is where you speak out the words you read. It’s a major cause of slow reading. Unfortunately, as most of us are taught to speak out the words we read when we learn to read as children, it is also one of the hardest habits to break. All that can be said is that you keep plugging away at trying to eradicate this habit.
  • digressing – digressing is where the reader will read a passage, then return to re-read it, usually in the mistaken belief that they will be able to comprehend better what has been written on a second read. Again, in speed reading circles this is seen as a major no-no, bad habit, which needs to be broken!

Conclusion

So, if you want to improve your speed reading skills, you need to remember not to subvocalize or re-read passages, and to read great chunks at one time by broadening your eye-span. Simple really! Actually, in fairness, it will take time to learn, and don’t expect to get it right the first time. Don’t push this issue too much, as pushing it may prove to be counter-productive.

The Importance of Exposing your Child to Lessons in Art, Music or Dance

As our children grow, they need well-rounded stimulation and exposure to various interests in order to become informed and educated adults later. Most children are taught to engage in sports, while their exposure to the arts may not be as intensive. As the daughter of a teacher who has taught the basics of art, dance, music and theater to children; I have an appreciation for what they have to offer. My life has been enhanced greatly by art and music, especially. If you are thinking about enrolling your child in afterschool programs, consider an art, music or dance class to get them started in the fascinating world of the arts. My mother’s students through the 45 years she has taught have appreciated what they learned from her, and have come back at times to tell her so. The arts are meaningful and broaden your child’s world tremendously.

For example, if you child wants to play an instrument, encourage this and find a tutor or enroll them in a class. Let your child choose an instrument then either rent one or buy a second-hand instrument until you know he or she likes it enough to get a new one. Music teaches discipline, and studies by experts claim that it can help with learning mathematics as well. Besides, music is a good outlet for children, and pulls them away from less educational pursuits like video games or chatting online. By stimulating your child’s brain, you are allowing them to gain mastery of a subject. By sticking with lessons and completing them one-by-one, your child will gain in self confidence, too.

If your child loves to dance, there are courses at the arts or recreational centers in your community on ballet, tap or more. Sign up for a course in the topic he or she finds most interesting, and make sure to give encouragement as the courses progress. Dance promotes agility, grace and physical fitness. Install these interests early to set them up for interest in these disciplines as they mature. Go to the dance performance at the end of the course, and your child will be happy to know that you support all their hard work. It means a lot for them to see that you approve of what they are doing.

Art is most near and dear to my heart, as I am a trained illustrator. Let your child try a broad spectrum of different arts and crafts, so he or she can see what is most interesting to pursue further. For example, there are courses in pottery-making, drawing, painting, enamelling, sculpture and much more. I myself have taught children in drawing and painting, and they absorb what is taught to them like sponges when interested in the subject. Make sure to find a teacher who will make learning fun and give them positive encouragement. Many of my students have told me at the beginning, “I can’t do this. I can’t even draw a straight line.” That doesn’t matter, there is no right and wrong in creative art. It’s the artist’s creative license to do whatever he or she wants. My main concern with insecure students is to let them know that it takes time and practise, like in any branch of the arts, to become skilled. It doesn’t happen overnight, no matter how talented you are. Then, I go ahead and teach them, project-by-project, to gain confidence and see that art truly is for them. Some of my students have taken off to create projects on their own, once they realized that perfection isn’t expected of them. The pressure is off, and they can be free to enjoy whatever medium they like the most.

As a kid, my mother and father enrolled me in a wide variety of courses. As a shy child, it scared me at first, but even the courses I wasn’t as interested in were educational to me. I took away from each course a little more knowledge and appreciation for what the pros have to do to become good at their craft. Though I didn’t get into dance, I loved drawing, painting, music and pottery. And, trying different things pulled me out of my shell, making the shyness disappear later on.

I am a professional artist, my preferred style is realistic art, but I appreciate different disciplines unlike mine, such as impressionistic or abstract art. My mother teaches her young students to appreciate the Old Masters (painters like Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, etc.) every year, and they love it. Each child is taught to choose a painting they like, then try to paint it, using basic tempera paint. It is amazing how lovely the paintings can turn out, and every year she gets copies of the work before it goes home with the kids. Unbeknownst to these three to five year old children, classic training in painting includes copying the Old Masters further along in art education. Trying it early is invaluable, and there is no pressure to create a masterpiece, just in having fun and seeing how each child interprets the original painting. The kids love it, and work hard to do a good job, so they can go home and give it to their parents. A very worthwhile project.

Having grown up immersed in the arts myself, I truly encourage you to give your child exposure to them away from what they learn in elementary school. If they enjoy a certain branch of the arts, encourage it, and later as adults they will do this for their children in return. The arts make the world a prettier, more musical and interesting place. No time spent on learning them is wasted. So, go ahead and enroll them in a course after school. You won’t be disappointed, and maybe you will open their eyes to a new passion to pursue. It’s most definitely worth a try.

High School for Home Schoolers

Home schools are a good option for parents who want to be involved hands on in the education process of their children. However, when home-schooled children reach the high school age, a critical question that parents face is whether to continue instructing them at home or enroll them in a public school.

Teenage is the stage in the life of any child when you need to be very cautious as a parent. During adolescence, children are easily influenced by negative thoughts and activities, and there are limits to how much you can keep an eye on them. If you want them to be under your guidance when they are passing through this often emotionally tumultuous period, then home schooling is certainly recommended. Though home schooling a child who has reached the high school stage can be a tough job, it can certainly be achieved with determination.

Home schooling through high school is beneficial, as your child can complete the studies at home in just 24 months or even less. This not only saves time compared to high schools where the tenure extends to 4 years, but also enables your child to focus energy and resources on specific subjects of his or her interest. Since your child will not have to face peer pressure, acts of bullying or even traces of negative influences like sex or drugs while being schooled at home, it could set an efficient learning environment.

If you send your child to a public school, a lot of time is spent on administrative duties, which includes roll calling for attendance, distributing out work and supplies, maintaining discipline, and the collection of homework and reports of each and every student. Commuting to and from school is also a time consuming activity that can exhaust your child. Home schooling can help children make optimum use of the time at their disposal.

Teenage children are the fastest growing group of the home-schooled population in the US that is currently estimated to be approximately two million. It has been proved that students, who have been home schooled, possess greater ability to absorb information and produce better results than students who have been educated in a public school. No surprise then that most colleges or universities in the US welcome home schooled students, provided they meet their basic eligibility criterion.

In order to start teaching your child at home through high school, you should make a plan that is based on their style of learning. You should place emphasis on the areas where they display specific interest. The curriculum should be conducive to their natural inclination along with covering the basics of all subjects so that they get to learn everything but master a few. If you are facing problems in covering difficult subjects, you could try using online school, educational software and videos. If you want your child to acquire a diploma or certification to apply for jobs in the future, you could help them prepare for the General Development Test (GDT) that is used to measure the skills and general knowledge of a home-schooled child.

With the help of a planned curriculum supplemented with real life experiences, home schooling of high school children can help them become mature and responsible human beings, and good decision makers.

Lead a Positive Life With Feng Shui

Whenever you switch on the television, browse any website, or even flip through any lifestyle magazine; you always come across colorful advertisements, reports and full-page articles specifically dedicated to Feng Shui. We wonder if these things can actually elevate and enhance the quality of our lives and we go ahead and listen or read things on this subject that can help us in achieving a good way of leading a healthy life.

It is true that we have heard a lot about Feng Shui in our daily lives and also come across many programs on it. Still some questions are left unanswered. We wonder, what exactly is feng shui? Well, it means air and water and in ancient times, it was known as Kan-Yu that means the law of heaven and earth. It is a discipline with guidelines that are compatible with many techniques of architectural planning, as well as internal furniture arrangements. The basic components of it are space, weather, astronomy, and geomagnetism. Proponents claim that it has a positive effect on health, wealth, and personal relationships. That is why many people are following this form of cosmology. Today there are many schools that teach the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony within the environment.

Earlier, it relied on astronomy to find correlations between humans and the universe. In fact, Chinese often used the celestial pole to determine the north and south axis of settlements. The aim of feng shui as practiced and followed today, is to situate the human built environment on spots with good qi. Well there is also a perfect spot, which is a location and an axis in time. In fact, some current techniques can be traced back to Neolithic China, while others were added in later times, mostly during the rein of Han, the Tang and the Ming dynasties. To determine the perfect spot, local manifestations of qi must be assessed for quality. The quality is further determined by observations made by compass known as Luopan. However, Qi is a difficult to translate and hence is left is untranslated. The word means air.

In feng shui, Qi means flow of energy. The compass is used to determine many things, including the detection of the direction of the flow of qi. Thus, compasses reflect local geomagnetism, which includes geomagnetically induced currents caused by space weather. Moreover, it could be said that it assesses the quality of the local environment and the effects of space weather — that is, feng shui is qimancy, or qi divination. Further beliefs hold that the heavens influence life on earth. The classical feng shui is typically associated with various techniques like relationship of the five phases or wuxing, wuxing relationships, time and many more. In the end, you can say that it is this technique through which you can lead a great life and overcome the obstacles easily which was earlier difficult to achieve. Hence, it has become an integral part of oneĆ¢??s life.
