The 6 Common Characteristics Of Leadership

All leader managers share six common characteristics:

1. Purpose
2. Communication
3. Plan Ahead
4. Conflict
5. Inspire Self towards the positive
6. Inspire Others towards the positive

These six can be summarised as;

“Be clear, treat people and problems according to the laws of reason and then, within reason, maintain a positive mental attitude.

Clarity is the most important characteristic of the leader manager.

Clarity relates to developing two specific forms;

1. purpose
2. communication

It means knowing what goals you want to achieve and the ability to focus your mind without distraction for months and years.

Any person, who takes the necessary time to achieve a state of definite purpose, has the potential to lead others to that purpose.

Communication
You may have clear ideas, but you may not be able to express those ideas to others such that they understand the full meaning.

Anyone wanting to develop their skills as a leader should develop their ability to use language:

* With accuracy
* With persuasion

The leader needs to be able to simultaneously be able to clearly explain complex ideas, and do so in language that will inspire other people to act.

Reason is the ability to think clearly

It means developing the ability to build plans of action that are likely to achieve the goal.

There are two main aspects where you may want to use your powers of reason;

1. Planning
2. Conflict resolution.

Planning

Planning is the ability to;

1. Prioritise tasks according to value and deadline
2. Delegate relatively lower value tasks
3. Handle interruptions
4. Make accurate decisions
5. Get the maximum value from every hour spent

Planning is a prerequisite of continued achievement.

Conflict

Conflict is inevitable and even beneficial, provided conflict is resolved rationally with no anger or enmity.

If conflict remains rational, better solutions emerge. When two people’s ideas contradict each other, through synthesis, a new idea emerges.

The team leader must be able to resolve conflict;

1. Quickly
2. Objectively
3. In a factual way
4. According to rational principles

This takes careful thought and careful language.

Emotions

The Positive emotions such as;

1. Enthusiasm,
2. Confidence
3. Energy

Are the spark that transforms logical plans into action.

Most people live in the hope that something outside of them will inspire positive emotions inside of them.

But the environment has a tendency to de-motivate, because bad news sells more copy than good news.

We are fed “fear messages”

To keep going through the disappointments the leader must create enthusiasm

The ability to manage the emotions has two aspects;

1. Your own emotions
2. The emotions of others

Manage your own emotions

If it is the leaders job to inspire others, then who inspires the leaders?

Nobody.

The leaders inspire themselves.

That means;

1. Constantly being positive
2. Setting up challenges that they can meet
3. Expecting things to be better in the future
4. Refusing to accept the words “I can’t” and replacing them with “We can, if…”
5. Taking defeat as temporary and always coming back stronger with a better plan.

This is each person’s individual choice: to be as confident in the future as his or her present circumstances reasonably permit.

This takes mental discipline, the ability to control your own mind, and the constant practice of the art of positive affirmation.

The ability to inspire others.
In this regard there are three types
The person who does inspire you. You may know at least one person that you can rely on to raise your spirits,
These people represent the ideal.

The second type is the person who is up one day and down the next,
On a good day this person is optimistic.
On a bad day this person is equally negative.
This does not represent the ideal because the moodiness creates uncertainty.

The third type is consistent but they are consistently down and pessimistic.
You can present this person with any situation and they will see the reasons why it is bad news.
This type represents the antithesis of the ideal.

In summary these virtues are;

1. Clear Goal
2. Clear communicator
3. Planner
4. Rational conflict manager
5. Ability to inspire self
6. Ability to inspire others

Our suggestion to you is;

Memorise the above six, and consciously develop yourself in each area.

How To Successfully Home School Your Child

Homeschooling your child has many benefits nowadays as private schools get more and more expensive, and let’s face it, that’s not going to change any time soon. Home education also allows much more flexibility as the family can choose convenient schedules for them and their child. Because of the structure of homeschooling programs, all the lessons can be fitted to suit the child’s learning style, pace and capability.

The first thing you need to do after deciding to home educate you child is to develop a clear curriculum. The flexibility that comes with home based schooling allows you to teach something in many different ways which can be a positive thing but also a negative one, because you risk providing an unbalanced education that can affect your child’s learning experience.

Setting a clear learning plan will help you be more effective as a teacher. A good start would be to look at the standard curriculum for his grade in a public or private school. This way you could notice the expectations for any given subject and decide on your targets and timeline.

Another very important aspect of home based schooling is discipline as you must draw a line between home and learning at home. The familiar environment can prove to be a distraction for your child. That’s why you, as the parent, must focus 100 percent on his education between “school hours”. Imagine teaching your child at the same time as trying to cook dinner or watch the Monday night sitcom. This attitude will send him the message that his education is not a main priority to you and he will treat it likewise.

As you and your child learn together, not only will you develop a priceless learning experience but you’ll also strengthen your relationship with him – a very important benefit.

What are some effective motivation and discipline techniques you have used with behavioral support students?

I am currently being considered for a position in an alternative school, with a particularly challenging student body. I have done vast amounts of research, and I have my own theories, but I am interested to know what any teachers out there have done in their classrooms to motivate challenging students, and what classroom behavior programs you have used sucessfully, particularly in special education (behavioral or emotional support). I'm interested in any thoughts or ideas you may have.

Thank you in advance for your input.
I also should add that this will be an inner-city junior high school setting.

I teach an EBD (emotional behavior disorder) class, and the biggest piece of advice I can give you in planning for a behavior program is to give as many positive reinforcements to the students as you can. A behavior plan that you may find in a general ed classroom or even a resource room that involves taking away points, activities, sticks, etc, DOES NOT work with these students. Once these students start escalating, it makes things much worse if you start to take things away. I let my students earn everything. Please take into consideration that I teach elementary students, but I've worked with middle-school students as well, and these students respond best to positive reinforcements. As you get to know your students, you will quickly figure out their likes/dislikes, as well as their emotional "triggers". Work out individual behavior plans/contracts with the students, and let them take part in the development of the plan/contract. When I first started teaching ED kids, I used a card system in which they would lose cards for bad behaviors. This didn't work at all. Often time when a student starts to escalate, they could care less about their cards. I learned quickly that I would have to change my behavior plan. If your students like computer time, let them "earn" it through the use of a point system or other type of plan. Most of these students do not understand their feelings and emotions, and they respond to a structured "point" system, schedule, etc. They need something concrete that they can follow consistently.
Most importantly, no matter how frustrated you get with the behavior of these students, keep in mind that you cannot rationalize with irrational behavior. When the students are acting out aggressively/emotionally, let them "come down" before you try and speak with them about their behavior. I hope this helps to give you some ideas. EBD kids are the most challenging of all special ed students I've taught, but the rewards are worth the struggles….most days! Good luck to you :)

According to Psychology what are ways to discipline a child?

Give me an example how to discipline a child based on Psychology analysis.

How to become a great parents toward his or her child in disciplining them?

You can use either:
1. Positive reinforcement – when the child does something desired, they should be rewarded immediately with something that is a treat to the child (eg: lolly). At first they should be rewarded every time (continuous reinforcement) but gradually reward them on random occasions when the desired behavior is shown. This is proven to be the most effective way to reinforce.

2. Negative reinforcement – teach the child that when they take away a negative stimulus (for example homework or doing the dishes) they are rewarded (example lolly or watching TV).

3. Punishment – when the child shows an undesirable behavior, they should be punished immediately afterward, if there is too long a gap then the child may be confused about the reason for their punishment. Also be sure that the punishment is relevant, for example: some children that act up in class are yelled at, which may seem like a punishment, but they are rewarded by receiving attention from the teacher. so the form of punishment must be thought out and relevant.

However, disciplining isn’t the sole way to becoming great parents, children make mistakes, we all do, and parents should be their to guide and help them try to make the right decisions. Hope i could help
