Of course you can, just make sure you get the shock collar that will adjust as the child grows up.

Yes you can teach your children in the same way as your dog. You use positive reinforcement with your and that is what you will need to do with you child. Dogs and children have one thing in common. That is they just want to be loved, care for and please you!

That is funny. But the answer is yes. I just never thought of it in that manner.
With love and kindness dogs and children can be raised. So yes.
(I put my dogs in time out.. they hate it. my kids get time out also they hate it. oh well they behave).

……They all train pretty much the same way. Lots of reward, clear guidance, clear commands, consistency.

My father-in-law was thrilled he was gaining a dog trainer for his son….. who needed some training. LOL. It’s been a fun ride.

Kids work well with obedience as well….. and "time outs". It’s hard to make a dog sit in the corner as part of the learning process…. but kids can do it!

I agree, it’s a yes and no answer. There are many things I do the same with my kids as I do my dogs (rules, boundries, respect) and things I do different. Keeping in mind we are talking two different mammals, lol.

I had dogs long before kids.. so have every sympathy with your question! Unfortunately, clicker training didn’t work with my kids, they don’t like fried liver as a treat and none were potty trained by six months… darn it!

Always sending a clear message that you are the boss, being quick to send a ‘no’ signal to bad behaviour and always being quick to praise good behaviour, plenty of sleep whilst small and good exercise as they grow – all these apply to children and dogs. Dogs just learn quicker.

Mmmm-yes, and no. As someone else pointed out- consistency is one big one, boundaries is another- and YES, you must be in charge. However, where dogs need things in black and white- they can or can't do something- period- not that they can do things sometimes, but not others. With children, you can definately reason with them- you can allow them to stay up late one night as a special treat, etc. They can also understand certain things like a time out.

as long as you aren’t rubing the kids nose in his bed when he wets it or smacking him with a news paper…..some things are similar.

I say….look up the book about Shamu. I think its called How Shamu Saved My Marriage or something. Its really interesting and it works with not just animals and kids, but husbands and friends, etc. The basic idea is to reward good behavior and not acknowledging bad behavior (not ignoring it….just check it out).

Its actually worked very well in my relationship. My dogs are good so I don’t have to use it on them and I don’t have kids yet.

Well I have a toddler and a puppy, so in a sense I do train them the same way. Positive reinforcement in both cases works very well. And whenever either do anything wrong they just get a stern "NO". I do understand where you are coming from, only I had the child first.

watch the south park episode called "Tsst" cartmans mom cant control her son so she tries nannies. after they fail horribly she tries the dog whisperer. its quite funny.

depends on the childs demeanor. One thing in common between the two…they both need rules,boundaries and limitations.

Ignore the person who called you a child abuser..they clearly did not understand the question!

There’s a great book called "Don’t Shoot the Dog" by behaviorist Karen Pryor that may be of interest to you.

Basically, reinforce the behaviors you want, and ignore those you don’t. This can work for people and dogs.

HOWEVER, there are huge differences in our species, and no, you should not train your child like you do your dog.

I think there are many traits that are similar between parenting, and dog owning. Consistency is the one that stands out most in my mind. Also, positive reinforcement, and redirection of bad behavior. And a truly well behaved dog is one where their owner invests a lot of time, energy, and love. And that is completely true with children!
