Dr. George W. Holden, Psychology Professor, SMU, initiated, organized and hosted a Dallas, Texas event entitled, Global Summit on Ending Corporal Punishment and Promoting Positive Discipline, June 2-4, 2011, Fairmont Hotel. Guests came together from 22 countries as far away as Capetown, South Africa, such as our first interviewee, Vuyiswa Sidyiyo and also Dr. N. Raj Mohan, India, and Dr. Michel Meignant, France. The use of corporal punishment on a developing human beings was discussed from many angles such as its harm, alternatives to this practice and strategies for having all forms of corporal punishment banned. I hate when parents who spank use the “you forced me to do it” excuse on their children. In that case, parents are not taking any responibility for their own actions. It’s not the kids who are forcing parents to spank; it’s the parents themselves who are choosing to spank. There’s just no excuse for hitting children!
