Comments on: what are your opinions on child discipline? Is the using a belt child abuse?

Using a belt is definetly child abuse. The only spankings that I don't believe are considered child abuse is tapping a child on a clothed bottom. I don't even really like that because there are more effective ways of disciplining especially at five years old. Taking away toys, sending the child to their room, not letting them play with friends or watch television, and other more natural consiquences would have been more beneficial. Any kind of hitting a child makes them more violent. They will turn to violence more when they themselves are mad or upset. Children should never be hit with objects or on other places then a clothed bottom. I see the occasional swatting of a child on the hand when they go after a hot stove or something like that.

i was hit with a belt & i didn't turn out so great.
abusive relationship after abusive relationship.

after age five you can talk to them, take things away, show cause & effect of behaviors (make them fix or work to pay & replace something if they made a mess or broke something) then you can actually TEACH them wrong & right, rather than whip them into submission.

In my opinion, using violence against your child is not only cruel, but the mark of an incredibly lazy parent. It is a parents job to teach their children what to do in certain circumstances, not scare or hurt them into knowing what NOT to do.

I can never understand why someone would want their child to be scared of them, or hurt because of them.

Discipline is a MUST, but physical violence is not.

The use of any object to hit a child no matter the age is child abuse. Violence promotes violence, especially in children who learn what they live.

If someone did something wrong to another adult, could they take off their belt and hit them with it? No, that would be assault and battery.

Yes the belt is abuse. I'd use the 5 minute time out
for discipline since the child is age 5. 1 minute per age
is safe to use.

Are you against discipline or using the belt? I'm just confused because of the way you word it. I think that using any object to strike a child, no matter the age is child abuse.
