My sister told me that it’s hardest for her at my parents house. Whenever they try to put their kids in timeout, someone always rescues them.
Where do you have trouble trying to discipline your child(ren)? How do you deal with it?
Probably anywhere that is public because for one it embarrasses you because your child is on the fritz, lol. Second of all, some people can’t just keep their traps shut about it. You are darned if you do but darned if the don’t.
I do what I have to do and let others’ say what they will. I know I am doing what is in the best interest of my child. People’s opinions will not change that.
I ran into that problem a couple nights ago at the grocery store and we had to put our two year old in time out right there in the store. He cried of course and we had people pass us up looking at us like we were monsters, but I ignored the looks and carried on with it. He won’t learn to behave if he thinks he can get away with it just because we are in public. Toddlers understand direct, quick discipline. They understand right here, right now; cause and effect.

Church, because you are trying to be quiet and it is really apparent when your toddler starts screaming. The best thing is to leave and go outside, but it is so embarrassing! There are all those other people with children who seem to never misbehave or make noise, and all the older people who look like I’m a terrible mother for having a misbehaving child, though I’m sure a lot of it is just my misperception. Anywhere else, it is easier to remove the child, or scold them, or let them cry.

in public aswell i think it can be quite hard, you can be there shouting at your child and people are walking past shaking there heads and wispering…. yeh cos they didnt see the kick in the shin you just got or your child hiding in the clothes rails causing u a heart attack! lol and again i have to admit iv had alot of auguments there too espcialy when they give you the sly comments!
i think its awful that you have to explain your reasons for diciplining your own child to a stranger!
but hey thats life and thats motherhood! it doesnt make me a bad mum and my child is the better for it in the end!

Just my thoughts on it. I have two young ones ages two years old and 10 weeks old.

I am not very confident in knowing how to discipline in the first place, so I get very shy and nervous about it if it’s needed when we are out in front of other people. Also, people like my parents and the sitter have always spanked, which I’m not comfortable with, but I’m afraid they expect me to do it and will laugh at the alternative methods I do use. I guess I’m just shy on my own to begin with, which makes it worse than it really should be. I don’t really know how to deal with it at this point yet.
