The format of this book is excellent: each page contains a classroom-management problem and then a list of possible solutions. However, the content is wildly erratic in quality. Some answers are excellent; others are ridiculous, and the classroom-management plans presented are so complex that few teachers will be able to follow through with them for an entire school year. New teachers, the ones who need this book, will have trouble sorting out the wheat from the chaff. Experienced teachers can, but also won’t benefit much from it.
It also grates that, throughout the book, Nissman habitually misspelled “Canter” (as in Lee and Marlene Canter, of Assertive Discipline fame) as “Cantor.” The book continually emphasizes the need for teachers to be role models in the area of taking pride in one’s work and paying attention to detail. To misspell one of the major names in classroom management (everywhere but the bibliography) in a published work shows me that Nissman isn’t interested in practicing what she preaches, there.
