Do we just have an inordinate number of punishment-fetishist trolls, or is it really such a huge part of parenting for many parents that it’s more focused on than questions of what they can do to lift their kids up, help them, be kind to them?

I think most are just trolls… I hate how so so many people here have to ask about punishing their kids.

I think we are all here for different reasons. Some people are probably here because they need help in the discipline category (nothing to be ashamed of.. it can be hard for some kids to respond) and maybe they just wanna vent and see what others peoples take on it is.
Some people are here for fun, others to share stories about their kids, others just goofing off and others are plain trolls.
I can’t weed them all out. lol.. if you can, I’ll mail you a medal.

Parents punish their children to show them they’ve been bad and help them be better people when they get older. No parent can have enough knowledge in this subject so they ask other parents for their opinions it doesn’t make them bad people it makes them students in the parenting class.

Mostly trolls. Punishment is just an easy subject to get people angry over. Spanking is controversial enough, but when you have a trollish imagination you can invent better to make people mad: “making your teen wear a nappy” as punishment through humiliation and “taking away bathroom privileges” is the new “I beat him with a stick and he’s not moving anymore should I take him to hospital?”

Most of them are indeed trolls.
I just asked a punishment question, all I want is others opinions about the subject.

I think it is the one aspect of parenting most people either feel insecure about or hold really strong feelings about. Most of the parents I know don’t need any help in being kind to their children. It’s the be tough with them that is an issue. What other dumb things would you have them ask questions about? One mother once asked a question about what brand of peanut butter to use. If that was the typical question asked on here this place would be a ghost town.

We do have a lot of trolls.
But we also have a lot of people that are trying to find alternatives that apply to their particular child. Using the same punishment for all of your children, all the time, is completely ineffective. I grew up in a family of 8 kids and we were all very different. A time-out isn’t going to work for a kid who doesn’t care if they sit in time out, for instance.
