Is their any tips for becoming a more disciplined person? All from not eating unhealthy to things like not speak about certain things. How does self discipline work? have you learned anything about this?

Start slow. Throwing yourself in the deep end is a recipe for disaster.

My boyfriend is very into martial arts. The martial arts, Asian cultures seem to be very based on self discipline.

First and foremost, I would imagine, you have to take yourself seriously. You have to see yourself as important enough to work for. And this is the tough part. It’s just Identity – and it’s the most difficult thing to understand and change. Identity is the sum of how you’ve been treated over all the years – so that at his point it affects what you think of yourself – are you worth self discipline? – or are you worthless scum?
People who see themselves as fairly worthless aren’t very good candidates for taking care of themselves.

It’s never easy – that’s for sure.
From my experience, the best way to develop self discipline is to develop and refine what you want. If you know what your goal is, and you value that more the steps in between and the temptations that arise, it’s a heck of a lot easier to make it from A to B. Once you have that goal – own it. Anything that prevents you from achieving it needs to be your responsibility, and not tied to extrinsic factors. That isn’t to say you should beat yourself up for not achieving a goal, just understand without judging what it was that prevented you from achieving it.
For eating healthier, it’s easier if you have some form of exercise you do regularly and get it in your mind that you aren’t trying to “eat healthier” but instead have your goal as being healthy. Start off eating whatever you want, but pay attention to how it makes you feel. Especially notice how it makes you feel when you exercise. For me, my vice was candy, and my exercise was running. I’d go for a run normally, and it was a struggle at first, but I could get through a run. However, I found that if I ate candy on the same day I went for a run, I felt awful after my run.
Over time, cultivate the idea that you are choosing to feel better as opposed to “giving things up.” For some reason, it’s a lot easier and it makes you own your choices more.
For holding your tongue, that’s a tough one, just be aware of your comments, and more so, be aware of how they can make other people feel. Try to put yourself into other people’s shoes and think through whether or not you would want to hear what you want to say. Some thoughts on a goal for this is to be understanding and empathetic.
