All articles I’ve found so far are about parents teaching their kids, but what if you have no discipline yourself?
How do you teach yourself self discipline when you don’t have the discipline to carry through much for very long?
It’s rather pathetic I know…
but I thought that it would be worth a shot

buy something you really like and force yourself to wait a week to eat it.
when you want to watch tv, force yourself to wait an hour.
force yourself to give up … for … amount of time

This may sound crazy, but take up Tae Kwon Do. They’ll whip some self-discipline into you.

Not pethetic. Actually impressed this is something you want to learn.
This is what I would do, were I in your shoes…
Make a plan – write down what you want to do and at what time you want to do it, then follow through. That’s all there is to it… but if the phone rings and someone wants to talk, tell them you are right in the middle of something and you will call them back. Just make sure you do what you say you are going to do, when you are going to do it.
Sorry, hope that’s not too rambling…

It depends on the task and what it is you’re trying to be disciplined about, but in general, you need to pull together all the tools in your arsenal. Make a battle plan in advance. Recruit friends to help you. Tell people about your plans so that you feel a lot is riding on your success. Sounds like lack of discipline is a habit for you. Breaking habits is very difficult. It requires a lot of self knowledge. So don’t irresponsibly say, “Gee tomorrow will be different” and then be disappointed when each day is the same. Organize yourself in advance and be ready for that day that is new.

my mom always told me that to stop yourself from doing something or saying something, put a rubberband on ur wrist and everytime you do something that you shouldnt have done, pull on the wrist band to make it slap you in the wrist. lol it actually works.

good luck!

The first step is your self recognition of the problem, which you’ve just done! Next, just take baby steps. Start out testing your discipline with something small. If you have a problem with eating too many sweets, try going for an entire day without them. Gradually lengthen the amount of time without sweets (or whatever the problem may be). Self discipline is all about routine and knowing what tempts you.

For those that are religious, pray, for those who are not religious, pray..
Bottom line, self-discipline/will power is a state of mind. It’s too simple, realize what is most important too you (it is usually the end result bottom line) and make that the priority. Life is about communicating, learning, setting priorities and follow through.

Do something that forces you to exhibit self discipline, like martial arts , or…? Meditation is one way to discipline the mind… Sort of.
