Another case of brutal corporal punishment has come to light in Bihar. This time of a teacher allegedly beat a boy seriously injuring his eye. The damage may be permanent. And it’s not the first incident of its kind. Shiv Pujan Jha reports.

Pressure is building on Governor Martinez to sign a bill that would ban corporal punishment in public schools statewide. Supporters rallied at the University of New Mexico at noon today, urging the governor to sign the bill. It passed narrowly in this year’s legislative session, after heated debate in the House and the Senate. ” Where else but in a public school in the state of New Mexico right now can you actually inflict some sort of damage to a child, hoping to change some sort of behavior,” Rep. Rick Miera, (D) Albuquerque, asked the crowd. ” I think that’s archaic and that needs to stop, period.” Miera, chairman of the House Education Committee, sponsored the bill.
Kolkata’s La Martiniere School for Boys has denied that a student’s suicide can be linked to his caning by the school’s principal days before his death.
The head of the Gauteng Department of Education has placed an educator on precautionary suspension pending an internal disciplinary enquiry. The educator is shown on video footage administering corporal punishment on a learner. The department is horrified by the images on the video footage and would like to remind all teachers that corporal punishment is outlawed by the Constitution. A grade 12 leaner at Diversity High in South of Johannesburg who recorded the video says he was punished by the educator with other leaner’s for skipping an Afrikaans class.
