This issue has come up alot in my head because I am 16 years old have a 2 year old neice who’s constantly in trouble even after she’s been disciplined. I take things from her, put her in the corner you name it. I’ve even spanked her a couple of times, and told her mother who does some of the same things I’ve done but to an extent because she’s the mother. But my question is what’s the point of discipline in a toddler when they have very little attention span, and don’t really know any better because they are so young? I want children of my own someday, and I just want to know because me personally I feel like it’s a bit waste of time since they really can’t discipline themselves at such a young age. So really what’s the point?
Well her mother knows I’ve only spanked her twice, but with my hand, I quit because it didn’t feel right smacking her like that. But her mom still spanks her, and she says that I shouldn’t hesitate. But there’s got to be some other ways instead of what I’ve been doing.

Our little boy is 22 months old, and we had some friends and their 19 month old boy spend the week with us. Their discipline consisted almost entirely of smacking his hands if he did anything wrong, yelling at him, and holding him in a death-grip time out until he stopped fussing. Is this actually the standard in toddler discipline? Do parents really think of toddlers as vindictive, controlling little monsters that need to be abused into submissiveness or they’ll become hellions?
