Ideas for making an inner city poetry classroom relaxing, creative, artistic retreat?

Classes start today. I’ve been teaching this class that I created for years, and it’s time for some changes (new strategies, new textbooks and materials, and a new course outline or syllabus). Students have told me that our poetry class is the one place in our college where they are safe to relax, express themselves, and be themselves. This is true for me too as the instructor.

I’m thinking of adding the following: music playing as students enter the classroom, non-religious meditation or visualization exercises to help them relax and open to their creativity, and time set aside for reflective journaling at the end of class

This is a technical college in a large urban city (NYC). The students come from many different cultural backgrounds. The students who take this class usu. think outside the box but come to class on the first day wondering what the heck they are doing there. Many are writing phobic. Some have anger management problems.

Classroom management – inner city, upper grades?

Hi, I am a first grade teacher in the inner city and this is my second year. I learned many lessons the hard way last year and this year, have a very well managed, bright group of first graders. The problem is, when I cover other classes on prep (3rd – 7th), none of the strategies I have learned to use with younger children work with the older kids. Almost every time I have done it there has been either a fight, an argument, kids running from the room, abuse of materials, and certainly no instruction taking place – just crowd control. I don’t have to cover preps much but I would like to eventually teach older kids in this school, so I really want to know: what kinds of management strategies, incentives/rewards, consequences, etc. work with older inner city kids. As background, assume minimal parental involvement/follow up and somewhat lax administrative back up (i.e. reluctance to suspend kids, threats and no follow through, etc). What can I do in the classroom to reach the kids?
