I am researching schools for the wealthier children in the 1880s and I realized I couldn’t find anything on the discipline system from that time period. Did they have detentions? Did they use demerits? Did they have permenate records that recieved black marks? Were physical punishments used? Were they made to clean/cook/assist teachers? It would be great if somebody could help with this question.
In Britain in the 1880s the most common punishment was corporal punishment, usually with a cane. Six strokes was the maximum allowed, and the punishment had to be recorded in the punishment book. The other punishments you mention are more recent in origin. These days corporal punishment is banned, and the raft of lesser punishments are not always effective!

Physical punishment was given. I am not sure about the others but I doubt them.

As far as I heard they had permanent records that served as black marks concerning post-secondary education. If you were not very smart there is no way you could go on to university at any point of time thereafter, As well, there were not too many girls at school. And, I don’t think they were made to assist teachers, but were physically punished.

I believe, and this memory is coming from a trip taken to a reenacted village (Time period may be slightly off), but I remember them talking about the dunce cap (it was a pointy hat used to embarass the child) and they also mentioned that teachers could not hit students on the hands because the children needed to work around their homes and on their farms. Again I’m remembering these things from a few years back , but best of luck
